Scouts BSA Uniform

The Scouts BSA uniform symbolizes the values and traditions of Scouting. It represents a Scout’s commitment to the Scout Oath and Scout Law, promotes unity among Scouts, and reflects pride in personal achievements. Above all, it stands for character, leadership, service, and being prepared.

Merit Badges

Sash Placement & Arrangement

  • Orientation: The sash is always worn over the right shoulder and hangs diagonally across the chest to the left hip. It can be worn over or under the uniform's shoulder loop (epaulet).
  • Placement: Start sewing the first row of badges about 3 inches down from the top edge.  Many Scouts use Badge Magic.
  • Layout: Badges should be placed in neat, even rows of three.
  • Organization: There is no official rule dictating the order of the badges. Scouts commonly arrange them in chronological order of achievement, by color, by category (such as grouping Eagle-required badges), or alphabetically.
  • Back of the Sash: When the front is completely full, additional merit badges can be sewn on the back. Non-merit badge patches, like camporee or event patches, can also be worn on the back of the sash
  • Rank Patch: Because Scout ranks change over time, consider sewing a Velcro patch where the Rank Badge goes so that badges can be easily interchanged as Scouts advance.
